What a story this beautiful bird and floral baby carrier can tell.  This textile was used as a well loved baby carrier many moons ago.  When mothers become pregnant, they start to create a unique baby carrier to prepare for their birth.  The mothers usually get inspiration from the zoomorphic, flora and fauna around the regions they live.  Throughout the pregnancy, the mother would diligently work on this piece and use it as a protection piece for their newborn baby. The baby carrier is worn on their backs, camouflaging them from the outside world.

The artisan mothers who made these types of baby carriers would labor over their children’s carrier as a form of protection, intricately stitching and decorating their with designs of birds, flowers and other talismans as they see that these items offer protection against mishaps keeping the child camouflaged and protected from evil spirits.

We will try to advise you of any imperfections that we see on these vintage textiles.  Please keep in mind that the imperfections are not considered defective but are considered a natural characteristic of a vintage historical textile.  The design of the embroidery panel was first hand drawn then embroidered on.  There are a few traces of unfinished embroidery where you can see the ink traces remaining.

We are not experts on vintage textile valuation but from our sourcing trips and talking to the artisans who make them we believe that the textiles range in age from five to eighty plus years old.  The artisans spend many months, years, a lifetime perfecting up to fourteen different types of hand stitching techniques.  Most of these textiles were originally made for special celebrations such as wedding, baby births and new year celebrations.
